Combine everyday English with conversation intensively twice a week

This course is for you if you have already taken an intensive course at the B2 level, but do not think you are quite ready to move up to C1 advanced just yet. B2+ is higher than B2. Moving up from B2 to C1 takes, on average, 250 hours of study, so this course provides a further 53 hours of class time to get you closer to C1!

The course is a combination of a general English course book, which focuses on the four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing plus grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, and communicative lessons based on newspaper articles or fun tasks to get you talking together as much as possible to improve your fluency and confidence. The first session of the week will be used to study the book and the second session will be devoted to the communicative tasks.

You can expect to improve your English fast as the course is intensive. This means you will quickly broaden your vocabulary and improve your spoken English significantly. On this intensive course, you will become more fluent when having discussions with friends or work colleagues.

This could be in-depth conversations about more abstract or complex issues such as:

  • Customs and behaviour

  • Science and technology

  • Storytelling

  • Talented people

  • Art and creativity

You will also learn language that will help you handle specific more advanced practical situations such as: agreeing and disagreeing politely, apologising, making and responding to suggestions, dealing with problems on the phone, expressing surprise and expressing opinions.

Thought-provoking newspaper articles from leading current affairs publications will be used to stimulate conversation during the communicative lessons. These are supplemented by YouTube clips to further inspire debate and provide listening practice.

The articles could be about diet and health, the global obesity epidemic, sustainable future transport, urban exploration and private property, the role of zoos, art, how different cultures communicate, and plastic and the environment. In each lesson, we will focus on broadening your vocabulary and improving your pronunciation through, for example, studying syllables and word stress, prefixes and suffixes and the definitions of new words.

The primary focus is that you become better at speaking English, but you can expect some written assignments for homework and grammar exercises, as most lessons will involve studying some grammar to ensure that your English is as accurate as possible.

As we will be meeting twice a week and there will also be homework, you will be training your English nearly every day, which means you will get into a totally different rhythm than if you had only been going to English classes once per week. On the course, you will typically meet students who need to improve their English because they have recently got a new job, or students who need to improve their English quickly so they can perform well in their current job.

Teaching material
You can buy the book before you start or wait until after the first class: Life, National Geographic, Upper-Intermediate, Student's book, Split Edition A , 2018 (Cambridge University Press), ISBN 9781337631495. We will study selected pages. You can buy the book online, for example, at www.saxo.com. Use the ISBN number to search for the book.
The book includes a student's app, which contains the video and audio from the student's book and workbook, grammar practice activities, interactive reading practice, expanded wordlists and games. In addition, the book can be projected on the whiteboard so you and the other students will typically follow the teaching there as well as looking in your own book

Overview of the course layout and material
You will receive access to our online digital platform, Moodle. Moodle provides a comprehensive overview of the entire course. You will also be able to contact your classmates and discuss the activities taking place in your class.

On Moodle you can:

  • see the plan for the course, the individual teaching sessions and homework

  • see teaching materials including extra materials such as videos

  • communicate with your teacher and your fellow students

  • follow up and catch up on lessons missed if you are absent during the course

Preparation time: approx. 1-2 hours.
There is a maximum of 16 students in this class.
